Planting the Downtown Planters

The WAM Group of Oakland County which is a group of minor offenders working through a community service program sponsored by Oakland University helped us clean out the planters and add compost to them on three Sunday mornings during April and May.  To protect their privacy, no pictures of them were taken.  But much appreciation for all their hard work.

We would also like to express our appreciation to Sandy McDonald of the Downtown Development Authority for coordinating this project with the city and for getting funds approved for plants, compost, mulch and watering; to the people at Phoenix Garage for all the help they gave us in trucking around compost and mulch; and to the Downtown Business Authority for arranging a lunch for us at Bo's Brewery on planting day.

Addendum: The above was written in the summer of 2002 and the Pontiac Garden Club continued to plant the planters for three more years. Then, the streets were redone with new streetscapes and fewer, new planters. These new planters are being maintained by the nearby merchants and include automatic watering systems.
